The surrounding countryside is rich in history and Welsh culture which has been shaped through major periods in history. At Big Pit national coal museum it's still possible to go "down the pit" and talk to ex miners about their family history of work in Welsh steel, iron and coal.

From the wind swept sand dunes of Merthyr Mawr to the seaside town of Porthcawl a favourite with generations of holiday-makers to enjoy a traditional seaside holiday with its blue flag beaches and fairground. Only a few minutes north of Porthcawl is the Kenfig National Nature Reserve - one of the most impressive conservation sites in Britain.
