With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, no doubt romance is at the forefront of your mind.

And, a break in South Wales is one of the most romantic holidays a couple can choose.

There are several cultural sites to visit here, as well as breathtaking beaches and landscapes.

Here at The Great House, we’re old romantics. Our hotel offers the perfect stay for couples this Valentine’s Day. Whether you’re surprising your other half or booking a holiday together.

Wales is an opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, without the hassle of travelling abroad.

The Great House is a romantic hideaway, and we’re not far from some true Welsh sites of interest. Two birds, one stone (sorry birds).

So, without further ado, if you’re thinking about booking a romantic trip for your Valentine this year, here’s why South Wales is the ultimate choice.

1. Castell Coch

Castell Coch is the fairy-tale castle of South Wales. Built on ancient ground, in a gothic style.

This style came about when John Patrick Crichton-Stuart paid architect William Burges to redesign the castle around 1848.

If you don’t mind us saying, when we hear Ed Sheeran’s “Castle on the hill” song, Castell Coch is the type of castle that springs to mind.

And if that image isn’t the definition of romance, then we don’t know what is.

Before Burges added his flare, there were ruins in this location from a previous castle built in 1081, for defense purposes.

William Burges was talented and eccentric, revitalising the castle with magnificent high ceilings, and dramatic interiors.

He had much freedom with the design, since the castle was not a permanent home for Stuart and his family. It was more of a holiday home.

Drawings of Burges’ plans can still be viewed, and the castle continues to be conserved and maintained.

Castell Coch is an unforgettable place, and Valentine’s Day is a great excuse to see a real-life fantasy castle.

2. A cocktail masterclass at The Dead Canary, Cardiff

If your other half loves nothing more than sipping an unusual cocktail, then a masterclass at The Dead Canary is a new way to spend Valentine’s Day.

What’s so intriguing about The Dead Canary is how its cocktails allude to Welsh legends of the past and present.

We’d be interested to try the Italian cocktail influenced by Joe Calzaghe (a former Welsh boxing champion). The definition of hard liquor; the drink that packs a punch; It’ll knock you out. We’re here all day.

And with a cocktail masterclass costing just £40, including a drink on arrival, a trip to The Dead Canary is value for Valentine’s Day.

And if Valentine’s Day is full, why not take your loved one another time?

You can always combine your cocktail-themed visit with a stay at The Great House.

3. Retail therapy at McArthurGlen designer outlet village

If you need some retail therapy this Valentine’s Day, then head over to McArthurGlen designer village in Bridgend.

This is a UK wide shopping centre, that’s extremely popular—we’re lucky to have one here in South Wales.

Find discounted gym wear to get your 2019 fitness regime in full swing.

And more romantic items too.

There are so many stores, restaurants and cafés here it will be difficult to know where to look.

Some brands include: Fossil, Gap, Hotel Chocolat, Ernest Jones and many more.

Maybe a jeweler like Ernest Jones might be a trip following a proposal? Too intense?

Shop ‘til you drop (but save yourself for your evening date too).

Located very close to The Great House, our hotel is in a great location if shopping is how you want to spend Valentine’s Day.

4. Explore South Wales on horseback

Horseback riding is a scenic and romantic way to immerse yourself in the lushness of South Wales. If you’re a seasoned equestrian, you’ll know the beauty of it. If you haven’t been near South Wales, let alone a horse—you’re in a for a treat.

Short on horses? We are too.

If you book a stay in our hotel, we’ll put you in touch with someone that can arrange the horses, and tailor your adventure, giving you the gems of the Welsh countryside.

5. Indulge in a Valentine’s Day evening meal.

No Valentine’s Day would be complete without a delicious evening meal (three-course) and a bottle of your favourite wine (not necessarily each).

The Great House offers an award-winning dining experience that will make for a truly special Valentine’s Day date.

And why not follow the meal with a stay in our retreat-like hotel too?

There is no better chance to spoil each other on Valentine’s Day.

"Wonderful experience"

We went for a Sunday roast. The food was lovely but what stood out was the exceptional customer service. It is rare nowadays, but everyone waiting on, was friendly and attentive. We will definitely go again and would recommend it to anyone.

"Evening Meal"

The food was delicate, very delicious and presented with great attention to detail. Everything on the plate was very complementing of one another. Great atmosphere and wonderful service. Surprised the restaurant wasn’t busier, even for a week day. Would recommend!

"Extra Special Christening Buffet"

We had a christening buffet lunch at the great house today. Having Eleanor on hand prior to today to answer any questions and helped make today such a success. The staff on hand throughout were helpful, friendly and the food was plentiful and to a high standard. Made the christening of our grandson extra special.

"Cooked to perfection "

We loved our festive meal. Everything was cooked to perfection. The chef really excelled himself. The waiter was lovely. We will book again for next year.

"Top quality service, food and surroundings"

Cannot recommend this place highly enough. We had the vegan high tea, and not only was it beautifully presented, high quality, delicious selection it was also served by friendly , knowledgable staff in a beautiful garden. Great value for money, I will definitely return with other friends.

"A Special Birthday"

Yet another great meal at the Great House. We went for the TASTER MENU, highly recommended. Showed the quality of the chef and his team. A special mention for the young man who brought and explained all the dishes. A special plate for the birthday really capped the evening off. Good selection of wines to accompany the meals. Front of house excellent. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

"Beautiful Easter Lunch"

I attended this beautiful hotel with my family for Easter Lunch. I can hand on heart say this was one of the most beautiful lunches I have had in recent memory. The beef was tender and the roast potatoes were stunning and that is just scraping the surface. The decor was very atmospheric and enhanced our experience. To top it off the staff were extremely welcoming and were readily available when we required drinks etc. I would recommend going here if you're looking to celebrate or just get out the house and enjoy some fine dining!

"Amazing tasting menu!"

Didn´t stay but four of us had the fabulous six course tasting menu on a busy Saturday lunchtime. Food and service were excellent! Courses were exceptionally tasty and beautifully presented and served. Would 100 % recommend.

"Fantastic food and service - as always"

Another fantastic Sunday lunch at the Great House. Had 3 amazing couses. The beef was incredible. I reckon this is one of the best Sunday lunches in the country. Served in a friendly and efficient manner. Highly recommend this, not just for Sunday lunch, but anytime.
